Luang Prabang Tours
Kayaking on Nam Khan River
  • Duration: 3 days
  • Price: from 161 US$ per person
  • Highlights: Experience kayaking on Nam Khan river and participate in a fascinating tour taking in the key sites of the Luang Prabang quaint town. Visit temples, espy the scenery from Phousi Hill and interact with the locals.

This kayaking trip explores the secrets of Luang Prabang, featuring a trip down the Nam Khan River, experiencing the beautiful mountain scenery, and the exciting rapids of the river. Prepare to be taken in by the physical pull of the river! The Tad Sea Waterfall is an amazing highlight and you will enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the waterfall. You will also visit Henri Mouhot’s tomb, a famous weaving village and the National Museum at the former royal palace.

On arrival at the airport, your guide and private car will meet you and transfer you to the heart of the spiritual capital of Laos. Luang Prabang has been claimed by UNESCO to be ‘the best preserved city in South East Asia’. The tranquility and charm of this town with its splendid natural scenery and cultural sights make it one of the most delightful places to visit in Laos.

After a short rest, we visit the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun, the holiest temple of the city, which was entirely rebuilt in 1887 after being destroyed by the invading Black Flags from Southern China. In the courtyard of Wat Visoun stands the Watermelon Stupa shaped like the fruit from which it takes its name. Then visit the shrine of Wat Aham and Wat Mai, a temple renowned for its golden bas-relief. Continue to the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, exterior architecture is decorated guilded stuccoes and doorways, a “tree of life” mosaic pattern set in coloured glass on the back wall and its three tiered roofs sweeping low to the ground representing classical Laotian architecture.

Next climb the 328 steps that lead to the top of Mount Phousi where you will be rewarded with marvelous views of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, the neighboring mountain ranges, and the city buildings. The sunset views are particularly spectacular as the sun casts glorious colors over the peaceful scenery below. Descend the steps on the opposite side of the hill and stroll to the nearby colorful Night Market. Every evening along the main street, the area’s ethnic minorities gather to sell their handicrafts. The quiet evening atmosphere and soft lights of the stalls combine to create a magical market setting from which to shop for souvenirs.
You will then be dropped off at your hotel to relax. Evening at leisure.

    Stay overnight in Luang Prabang.

Following breakfast take 45 minute ride by Tuk Tuk to Ban En village where you go kayaking down Nam Khan River for a few hours, passing stunning karsts mountains and observing the local activities at various small villages on your way. A few small rapids on the way will certainly keep it exciting! Stop en route at Tad Sea, a large beautiful waterfall (beautiful clear blue water cascading down multiple levels) that is situated in the forest with a cool natural swimming pool. Immerse yourself in the cool waters of the spring in the big pool.

Continue kayaking downstream to retrace the tomb of the French explorer Henri Mouhot, who stumbled across Angkor Wat in 1860, but succumbed to a malaria attack in Luang Prabang on 10th November in the following year. Disembark for overland transportation to visit Ban Phanom, a well-known weaving village of Tai Lue, who used to make silk weaving textiles for the former Lao royal family. Return to Luang Prabang by the late evening just before sunset.

    Stay overnight in Luang Prabang.

    Meals included: Breakfast at hotel.

Start this morning with a visit to the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum (close on Tuesdays), where you will explore the history of Laos. It displays a collection of artefacts reflecting the richness of Lao culture dating from the days of the early kings right through to the last sovereign. Next, visit Phousi Market where you will see such diverse offerings as dried buffalo skin, local tea and saltpeter among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings.

Rest of the day is at your leisure for last minute sight-seeing or shopping until your transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
